Madame Blueberry

Did any of you watch Veggie Tales as a kid? We did… and Madame Blueberry was definitely one of my favorites!!

blue Seriously… what a diva!

But today’s post isn’t about cartoons at all – she just popped into my head for the first time in a decade because I was eating the most delicious Blueberry Breakfast Cake EVER! It is so so so good. And so I decided to jump on the blogging-recipe-train and tell the whole world about it!!

This recipe was created by a dear friend of mine from work. She brought it in for her birthday a few summers ago. And when I was in high school my workspace was in a little corner in the main workroom. Everyone brought food and put it on the island. And of course I would walk past the island a zillion times and stand there to fold my brochures, stuff my packets, make my copies, etc. etc. etc. Well I couldn’t resist this cake. And I probably gained 10lbs. that very day – but it was so worth it :) Every summer since then, when blueberries are plentiful in the grocery stores my mom and I make this….

Ingredients:

1/2 lb. butter, softened

1/2 teas. vanilla

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

2 cups flour

1 teas. baking powder

1/4 teas. salt

1 cup sour cream

2 cups fresh blueberries

Crumb Topping Ingredients:

1 cup flour

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1/4 teas. salt

1/2 teas. cinnamon

1/2 cup butter, softened

Directions:

Cream butter with sugar, add beaten eggs and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients separately. Using a mixer alternately add dry ingredients and sour cream to butter mixture. Gently fold in blueberries. Grease a 9x13 pan and spread in the cake batter. Then mix all the ingredients for the topping until crumbly, spread over cake. Bake at 350 for 50-55 minutes.

When it’s all said and done you’ll have something that looks like this :)

My mom made it last weekend and it was a little more dry and browned on the edges and it was soo yummy. This week’s batch was more moist and was equally as delicious. Depending on how you like it you can add more or less blueberries and bake it for shorter or longer! And be prepared to eat it with a large glass of milk :)

Let me know how it turns out if you decide to make it!

Movin’ Out

Yes I am singing the Billy Joel song in my head :) But unfortunately there are no motorcycles in this post, or in my life. But that’s irrelevant.

This is a little look back at Moving Day!

A – pizza and chips on the floor, before any moving actually took place
B – Kay and I – we were so excited!!
C – team work – I got them the Lang Calendar and wall frame as their engagement gift
D – Ta-Daa!! It was the first thing they hung up in their apartment – so sweet!!
E – Finished!! They were tuckered out after an entire day of loading and unloading

Congratulations on your first place Kay and Bucky!!

A year ago when Kay and I came home from school I hated living with her. We had to share a bedroom and a bathroom. I have a place for everything, she drops stuff in the first available carpet space on the floor. I’m an early bird, she’s a night owl. Etc. Etc. the list goes on and on. But I’m so sad she’s moving out! We’ve become really really close since I moved home in February and they are two of the best friends I have!!  She’ll be living here until the wedding and then she’ll be gone :(  Thankfully gone only means about 20-30 minutes away…
And I have to admit - sharing a bathroom with one sister instead of two will be nice :)

The Longest Day of the Year

On Tuesday Kay, Bucky, Mark and I all went out for ice cream and it was boss for the following reasons:

1. It was the first day of summer so ice cream was obviously a necessity.

2. It was the longest day of the year and so it seemed appropriate to be enjoying the extra sunlight.

3. Kay and Bucky have never been to Freddy Hill together on a date.

4. It was the last time we will double date while Kay and Bucky are still dating – OMG!!!

5. Mark and I debuted our pre-marital counseling business. And. We. Rock. No really. We’re awesome. We have so much knowledge and experience, ya know?
We charge $50 a session ;)

Our most valuable piece of advice came from the more eloquent of our duo:
“Never go to bed with your socks on.” You heard it here first, folks. Just remember that. Marriage + Bedtime = No Socks

They taught us a few things too… a week before your wedding you will cry about a lot of things… and by they I mean Kayla… and by a lot of things I mean everything

1. Your whole body hurts because your sneakers don’t support you and you don’t have money right now for new ones because you’re getting married. Cue the tears.

2. There are a zillion last minute details to attend to and when simple things like the seating arrangement and DJ act up, you will cry.

3. You will also cry because you’re extremely emotional about all of the firsts and all of the lasts.

4. None of your clothes will fit. Why? Because you’re getting married. And you’ve been up in the gym working on your fitness. And while you’re rockin’ the new bikini bod you have nothing to wear. And you will melt down in front of your closet.

I really hope you were all enlightened as greatly as we were :)

ps. Mark and I look like babies. I guess summer makes ya young ?!

Pots, Pans, and Plates – OH MY!!

My sister’s bridal shower was a month ago! Holy Canoli – where does time go!?

Between work and life I’ve been crazy busy and now with only 10 days left until the wedding it’s only getting busier!! I think the last time I blogged about the shower was in April - the invitations my mother made were beautiful!! She did an amazing job coordinating the shower too!

Keeping the surprise was really tricky for us because Kay still lives here at home. My mom was constantly hiding stuff in her closet and in the basement! It was crazy! She was convinced that Kayla had figured out when the shower was, but she was totally surprised! She thought it was going to be a few weeks later due to one of her future-sisters-in-law coming to town… When she walked in she was completely stunned!

She thought she was just showing her fiancĂ© and his mom around our church… little did she know we were all waiting in the dark!! And wait we did… they couldn’t get her downstairs and we waited with the lights off for 15 minutes!!

She was surrounded by white and purple – gotta love Bed, Bath & Beyond free gift wrap!!

Congratulations Jeremiah & Kayla!!

These were the favors – little boxes in the shape of a slice of cake filled with candy – these were SUCH a pain in the rear end. If you’re throwing a shower don’t choose these… we had to glue them together and no matter how many times we glued them, they kept on popping open!!

I love these ladies!!!

When it was all over we loaded up three cars in the pouring rain and delivered it all to their apartment!! It was such a nice afternoon with friends and family!!

Father’s Day Endeavors

My family went to Bushkill Falls after church on Sunday to celebrate Father’s Day!!

Bushkill Falls boasts itself as the Niagara of Pennsylvania… and it’s true! The waterfalls are gorgeous! We walked up and down a lot of staircases, but the views were amazing! Sorry for the picture over-load my mom took so many good ones!!

Dad and his girls :)

I can’t wait to frame this one!!

this is just the beginning of the silliness

Reppin’ the Carolinas – we’re USC fans not UNC fans (GO DUKE)… my shorts were like $1 at the thrift store… and $50 in real life… so it was worth it…

this ones obviously out of focus but it makes me laugh for some reason… love my family

the first of many, many steps

halfway down the climb of the main falls

SO BEAUTIFUL!! and it was the third rainbow I’ve seen this weekend!!

the bride and her maids of honor in front of bridesmaids falls

this is the view from the top – all the way down the Delaware Water Gap

we’re there on the bridge…

I don’t even know :)

seeing that sign was a major PTL moment!! my knees were killing me!!

Favorite quote from the day:

Kay - “So in my dream this guy that always comes into work was at the restaurant. He was wearing a wife beater and – ”
Me - “He was wearing a WHAT?!?”
Kay - “A wife beater”
Me - “A WHITE BEADER?”
Kay - “Oh I thought they were called wife beaters….”

We had a really great time and it was so nice to get some time as just the five of us a few weeks before the wedding!! Soon we’ll officially be a foursome or a group of six!!
